Dreamland

Hello again!

I’ve put this off for a few days now, but it’s about time that I sit down and actually write this blog, so here it goes.

I’ve been here for five months now, and in that time, quite a bit has changed. The most obvious is, of course, language-wise, but I’ve also gained many amazing friends and experiences.

Some things haven’t quite been what I expected them to be, but some, such as the relationships I’ve built, have been so much more important to me than I expected. I’ve spent these last two months (ever since the last vacation) in my own personal version of heaven, so busy with my French friends that I didn’t have time to miss home. And now, I’ve moved in with my friend Charlotte—I finally get to experience a “host family” with somebody my age, which is quite fun.

I could get all sappy here, but the video I posted on the 21st shows it pretty well—all that video was taken in a span of four days, and it’s kind of a present for the Frenchies, with whom I’ve passed so many good days lately.

OH! In other news, I only have 2 days of school left. And then I’m off to Bordeaux again, and the final few weeks in June, I’ll spend with Charlotte (B.) and my other friends. I’m so not ready for this to end, it’s just TOO GOOD.

♥,
-Aly

American Foods

Hello, everybody!

I was just thinking about this today, though I admit I am often reminded of all the foods that I desperately want to eat. So, this is my list of American foods that I will be consuming in great quantities upon my return to the US.

  1. Macaroni and Cheese. -- Really, there need be no explanation. Mac & cheese is one of my favorite foods ever, and I haven't eaten it since ... uhm... FAR TOO LONG.
  2. American-style breakfast. -- I eat tartines every day. Give me some PANCAKES and scrambled eggs, some bacon, bagels, or any breakfast excursion to Chik-fil-A. Shame on me for many of these, but yeah. OH, and SUGARY CEREAL! Where are my Lucky Charms?! :D
  3. PB&J-- Yeahhh. Peanut butter doesn't exist here.
  4. COOKIES! Brownies, cake-with-legit-frosting. -- I could make these but it's not the same. Give me some cookie cake or anything with frosting...
  5. Phish Food flavor of Ben & Jerry's. ... This one is pretty self-explanatory. Abundance of ice cream, not much Ben & Jerry's, besides the fact that it's 5 euros, which is like $7. OH, AND Breyer's Mint Chocolate Chip!
  6. Mexican food. (wait, that's not American, but uhm, who's being technical? Mexico is in North America. Thus American...?)
  7. PASTA with non-meat-sauce or pasta with not-ketchup-and-Gruyere.
  8. Barbeque. -- Again, I'm a bit ashamed of this one, but let's be honest... that stuff is good.
  9. Pop-tarts!-- should have included this with breakfast, but it's rare that I eat pop-tarts as breakfast.
  10. Hershey's Chocolate. -- Okay, so this one is unfair. There's loads of chocolate here, really good chocolate like Lindt and such. But, some cheap chocolate that you can eat in one sitting? Yes. Yes. Yes.

Okay, I just proved my co-presidency of the Fattie Club. Happy May!
-Aly

P.S. It was blog about food, blog about my recent spaz-dom about colleges, or blog about the fact that I now realize I'm Bilingual. I'd like to pretend this is the best of the three. But that may just be because I'm eating fail pasta...

MAY FIRST

Hello!

Happy May, you guys!

I've heard from many of you that you've already received the post cards I sent-- to those of you that haven't gotten them, they SHOULD be there soon! If you have given me your address, I've either already sent or am about to send you mail.

April was a good month, the midway point and the next step closer to finishing up my time here. Like all the other months, it was good (with some bad).

In April I loved:
  1. Travelling-- I finally EXPLORED France. I saw Bordeaux and Toulouse, and Carcassonne, as well as many other small villages with history.
  2. Meeting new people & getting to know my French friends better-- this last month has been AMAZING in that aspect! Good-bye and good riddance, awkward stage of friendship! You guys at home, I've said it before, and I'll say it again with complete convinction... the Frenchies are fantastic, and I love them to bits.
  3. Renewing my "France crush"-- Once again, the love for France is back... thanks to the experiences I've had this month, and a renewing of the vision of France I get when I see all the beauty and history here. Except now, I recognize it's faults. And that's perfectly fine.
  4. Fluency-- After four months of living here, I've finally heard it from just about everyone: "You speak French really well!", and at last, I believe them. I had a conversation with Charlotte about this the other day, and basically, I can no longer say that I'm NOT fluent. This makes me ridiculously happy. I'M BILINGUAL?!
  5. Just to round out this list, April was amazing because... I'm nearly finished. I'm sad and excited about this, with how things have been going, but I think about it... four months. It's been nearly a year since I started this blog, since I truly began planning this trip. Four far-too-fast and all-too-slow months. I'll be home soon-- I'm excited for the new possibilities and about tackling the next adventure. And I'm really, really impatient to see all my friends and family at home, because I miss them so much.

Things that weren't so great in April:
  1. Saying goodbye to new places & people.
  2. Communication problems.
  3. Train Strikes.
  4. Freaking. School.
I mean, that's really nothing, and I really don't mind those that much because saying goodbye to people and places is rough, but I WILL find a way to go back and see them in the future, the communication problems have been resolved, the train strike was annoying but it did allow me to spend more time with people that I find to be amazing, and school meant more time with friends in Frejus! :D

In other news, I have far too many things to deal with at home. Home being the US, of course. Real life is calling me back, responsibilities and plans for things that are Actually Quite Important.

AP French won't exist next year, so far as I've heard. This means that my French education is basically over, and I'll have to start taking lower levels of French than I'm capable of. It aggravates me to no end, that I've worked (as have the other students that want to take the class, even if there are just 5 of us) for YEARS to be able to take AP French. The AP French teacher was my FIRST French teacher, ever, and I just think it would be really cool to end my years of French class (that is, if I don't take it in college) with the same teacher I began learning French with.

Anyway, MAY. I'll let you know how it goes.
Lots to do! BYE.

Kick Ass Frenchies

JP, Lisa, Nolwenn, me, and Cindy before Kick Ass :D
(Picture credit: Jean Paul, except I think Charlotte took this one.)

Hello again!

I know, you probably feel like you're hearing from me a lot lately. This is due to the fact that I've decided I really need to use my time better, and I've just kind of needed to write on here lately. I think this will be my goal for the next 2 months, so you should be hearing a lot more from me! (I've actually got plans for some things for this blog; check for updates and interesting things! :D)
I have FIVE more postcards. I sent 4, then 10 last week, and today another 11. I lie, it's technically two, since I owe three of you a postcard! Though I may cave in and buy more, if I get more people that want them. So, uhh, seriously, ASK IF YOU WANT A POSTCARD! I would love to send one! Also, I love postcards. Even with pears on them-- thank you, Katherine! (She is awesome! Go check out her blog full of pretty things, happy thoughts, and Grand Schemes :D)

I've been hanging out with my friends lately! They have completely pulled through for me on things we've mentioned doing, such as going to Nice and having sleepovers and such.

I spent Saturday hanging out in Centre-ville with Nolwenn, Lisa, Charlotte H., and Jean-Paul. We went to lunch (I ate another American, you guys. I admit, I really just wanted to say I've eaten more Americans. Such a cannibal...!), took pictures, wandered around, and finally joined Cindy at the Cinemas to see Kick-Ass. I thought it was awesome, but I enjoy such nerds-conquering-the-world-I-mean-being-Nerdfighters type movies. I kept dying of laughter, even though I didn't even understand what exactly they were saying ALL the time. After all that, we had ice cream and hung out more. We managed to convince people walking by we were insane, as well as stalk a marching band in Period Dress (I still don't exactly understand why there were so many people in Old-Fashioned Clothes were wandering around... and all the BOOM!s that weren't fireworks?), and various other fun things. Oh, Frenchies, how much joy you bring me...
[I took pictures! They're on facebook.]

JP, Charlotte H., Lisa, Nolwenn, Cindy

I'm going to Nice with Charlotte B. on Wednesday! We're going to tour the Old part of the town, eating the Best Ice Cream in Nice, and I'm spending the night at her house! (Why, yes, I do have school Thursday. *feels B)

OH! And tomorrow, I've got TWO CLASSES (technically 3, but 2 hours of French except one hour is with the Premier ES1, and 2 hours of "hande." [Handball, they always leave off the -ball.])! After which, me and the Frenchies are going to McDonald's (I think that will be the 10th time), then the Theatre to see Mozart's Flute Enchantee. It will be AWESOME! There's ACROBATS!!!!! (I hope I'm allowed to bring my camera because I definitely am.)

I'll tell you about tomorrow and Wednesday as soon as possible-- hopefully with pictures! But at the moment, I have to run errands and do Important Things, so I'm going to peace out and not include any details about why today is fail, but in a way that I don't really care about because I'm in a great mood. :D

Feb. 27: Carnavalesque

IMG_0975                                 Hello!

I’ve reached a decision about the two January posts that I haven’t written: they won’t be. I will post pictures (once I figure out a way to do so) of the trip to the Grand Canyon that I took with Dad, and the first week of school… well,I’m not sure about that one, but at some point I’ll discuss it. xD

So, I’ve had two weeks off from school and today is the LAST DAY! I’m, as always, a bit torn about this, as I want to go back to school [more French and less Monkey] but I really didn’t do much this break. Hopefully that will be remedied for the next break!

February 27th was one of those all-around-GOOD days that probably tops the list of favorite days in France. I’m certain it’ll stay up there, it was that good. IMG_0916IMG_0918

The mascot for this Carnival in Nice is the frog on top of the world, though my favorite giant balloon is the bird. But it’s all so COLORFUL!

You know what "Mardi Gras” is (“Fat Tuesday”), the beginning of Lent and all that, and it’s called Carnaval here (and I think most places, except in England it’s Pancake Day). I didn’t actually go to Carnaval on Fat Tuesday, but luckily Carnaval in Nice goes on for quite a while—Feb. 12 to 28th. The website is here if you want to go check it out and see a bit of video from the official DVD.

IMG_1021

Confetti! Color! Sunshine! Happiness! … Carnaval-esque spirit!

I woke up late, but that wasn’t a big deal, since it’s vacation! Nathalie made Quentin and I “tartines” for breakfast, followed by sandwiches for lunch.

The drive there was uninteresting; Nathalie kept exclaiming about the Alps in the distance, capped by snow… they were pretty. Unfortunately, taking pictures out of the front window is a bit annoyingly difficult, as by the time I tug out my camera and such, the view is gone. It’s also hard to capture the true beauty of it; a beautiful, warm day near the sea while you can still see snow in the distance. It’s a novelty for me; the contrast of landscape so close to home. IMG_0907

Still in Fréjus, but you see: flat. Then, mountains in distance! WITH SNOW!

IMG_0911

This view is great, and it’s a shame that the road is RIGHT THERE. Do you see how different it is from Fréjus?

When we arrived in Nice, it was filled with people, and it was just after 1. It was absolutely impossible to find a place to park, between the over-crowded streets and confusing one-way streets. It was even worse than when Dad and I went to Nice, as this time portions of streets were blocked off for Carnaval, there were people everywhere, and the parking areas were filled. IMG_0912

We wasted quite a long time trying to find a place to park, but eventually we squeezed between two other cars in the French style of parking (back up into spot; move forward until you hit the car in front of you. back up, hit the car behind. settle into the middle and thank goodness for small cars!). At last, we were near the gates of the Flower Parade, but we didn’t have tickets. (Here, you have to pay to get in). The line by the ONLY remaining ticket booth was HUGE, so we just got into the back. Nathalie chatted with some strangers (people in Southern France are like Americans in that way), while I was distracted by people-watching. IMG_0913Copy (2) of IMG_1054

Unfortunately, the ticket stand CLOSED within 10 minutes of us arriving. We joined the MAD RUSH of people to get in, and somehow I managed to slip past the people at the gate with a smile, as did Quentin. Nathalie was locked out, but kept insisting that we go.

IMG_1261 IMG_1254 These are later on in the day—office of tourism with BIG HUGE carnaval-head on top and the boulevard by the beach.

“Do you have your cell phone?” she asked from behind the barricade of Security People (that’s hardcore).

“Yes,” I replied. I was really nervous, and Quentin was acting like he wanted to go back out. I was mostly scared that they wouldn’t let Nathalie in, that I wouldn’t be able to find her afterwards, and that we would have come all the way to Nice and NOT see the parade. IMG_0935IMG_1094

Flowers! All over! And pretty dresses.

“I’ll call you afterwards; now, go watch the parade! Quentin, go with Aly.”

(GRANTED THIS WAS IN FRENCH.) IMG_0972IMG_1022IMG_1058

So, with Nathalie’s insistence, I joined the crowd and began taking pictures. I eventually moved further and further towards the center, but lost my place as I was jostled or pushed back. The sun was right in my eyes, which was an unpleasant side effect. The crowd was huge, but generally didn’t push or shove you. Some of them wore strange hats, and being short, I was doing a lot of STRETCHING and attempting to avoid taking pictures of the other people.

IMG_1024

I didn’t even try not to take a picture here—this is to show the guys selling silly string and confetti and the mimosa.

IMG_0998

See what I was up against?! IMG_0974IMG_0951IMG_0949

IMG_0939IMG_0945 IMG_0944 IMG_0964IMG_0977IMG_1028

Finally, I found a good place to rest… until I heard my phone vibrating insistently in my bag. I had shed my outer layer (wool coat), and that was sitting in the top of my purse, keeping me from zipping it closed. Besides the fact that is a BAD IDEA (pickpockets?!), I wasn’t that concerned… because I couldn’t even get into the depths of my bag to find the tiny cell phone!

IMG_1095

I guess this is like tight-rope-walking, except it’s on railing, the other side being a bit of sidewalk, and then the beach.

I called Nathalie back a minute later, but since I couldn’t hear, I had to back out into the moving line of people, all searching for a place. Fighting against the flow, I made my way back to the entrance where Nathalie had been locked out, all while brushing off the confetti-rain that had covered me during my journey.IMG_1027

Soon, we made our way back into the crowd, slowly working our way back to were I was, which had been filled in by other people by then. We kept moving, eventually stopping near an open section of the blue-painted plywood fence, where Quentin and I climbed up to rest precariously on the top next to other kids (some older, some younger). We watched the parade go around three times in total, so I have doubles of pictures—each is slightly different, due to the change in position and light.IMG_1032

For example, this is what happens when I don’t pay attention to lighting. Unfortunate looking-into-the-sun position during the parade.

IMG_1033

…Same float as above, except you can actually see it this time.IMG_0979

Copy (2) of IMG_1074

Since I don’t actually have pictures of myself that Nathalie took at Carnaval, here’s a picture I took of myself while sitting up on the fence. Euhhh, let’s pretend it’s more flattering than it is.

I never caught the mimosa (not the drink; that’s what they call the flowers) that they were throwing, as well as the other flowers off the float, leaving some of the floats looking a bit scraggly, I assume after so many days of running the parade.

IMG_0957

IMG_0981IMG_1014

IMG_1154 IMG_1111 IMG_1128 IMG_1132 IMG_1138

Towards the end of the parade, we finally got towards the fence at the front. The promenoirs (the people walking in the parade) were tired by then, but still kept those well-practised smiles on their faces. I decided to say hi, so I waved crazily and yelled “BONJOUR” at them with a big smile. My dedication was rewarded with a hug from Death and later, a dude in a shaggy-scarecrow-ragdoll outfit. Oh, and the guys on stilts wearing all red, flame-like clothing tried to intimidate me while I laughed hysterically.IMG_1219

IMG_1237  IMG_1220 IMG_1234

The parade at night was better—the same atmosphere, but a different parade. We had seats right on the street, so Quentin and I kept jumping up with our confetti and silly string to attack each other, the floats, the promenoirs, and of course the people behind us—oh, carnival! (All of those things are normal and do not induce anger.) The same shaggy-scarecrow-ragdoll people picked me out of the crowd and pulled me into their group for dancing and a bit of revelry. That moment, the reluctant me dancing with a crowd of Carnival people—best. ever. IMG_1328

IMG_1315 IMG_1322   IMG_1330   IMG_1333IMG_1342 IMG_1409IMG_1354 IMG_1356  IMG_1367IMG_1370 IMG_1400

IMG_1489 IMG_1491 IMG_1494 IMG_1500 IMG_1501 IMG_1502 IMG_1504 IMG_1506 IMG_1515 IMG_1524 IMG_1527 IMG_1533 IMG_1535 IMG_1558 IMG_1560 IMG_1566 IMG_1570 IMG_1485 IMG_1486

When we finally left Nice, it was late into the night; the way home was quick, and quiet until I broke the silence by saying STAY AWAKE! to Nathalie.

Carnival in Nice, overall: definitely amazing, and even now, months later, I remember it all in so much detail. Add it to your bucket list! :D
